Gujarat has seen a proliferation of biomass pellet manufacturers and traders since 2022. While this competition is healthy for pricing, it has also introduced significant quality variation. Procurement teams that simply choose the lowest-quoted supplier often face inconsistent GCV, high moisture content, or unreliable supply — all of which cost more in boiler efficiency losses than the price savings delivered.
1. GCV Certification — The Non-Negotiable
Always demand a third-party GCV test certificate from a NABL-accredited laboratory. Any supplier quoting "4400 Kcal/kg" without test documentation is making an unverified claim. BBI provides NABL lab certificates with every consignment. Typical tests to request: GCV (Gross Calorific Value), moisture content, ash content, volatile matter.
2. Consistent Moisture Control (<10%)
Moisture content is the single biggest quality variable in biomass pellets. Pellets above 12% moisture lose effective heat output and can cause boiler steam fluctuations. Visit the supplier's drying and extrusion facility before placing bulk orders. Consistent pellets should have a uniform colour, hard surface, and a clean snap when broken — not crumble or feel damp.
3. Ash Content Documentation
Ash content determines your boiler cleaning frequency and ash disposal cost. Suppliers using pure agro-residue (cotton stalk, groundnut shell) typically achieve <2% ash. Watch out for suppliers blending MSW (municipal solid waste) or construction debris — these dramatically raise ash content and can cause boiler tube damage.
4. Supply Volume Reliability
A supplier who can deliver 10 MT once is very different from one who can maintain 100 MT/month reliably across 12 months. Ask for: their raw material procurement territory, storage yard capacity, number of active industrial clients, and references from clients with similar volume requirements to yours.
5. Price Transparency — Ex-Factory vs Delivered
Always get both ex-factory and delivered-to-site pricing. Some suppliers quote attractively ex-factory but use inflated logistics rates. Get three transport quotes independently if buying large volumes. Also understand whether the quoted price includes GST (5%) or is exclusive.
6. Contract Terms and Price Lock-In
For industries with predictable monthly consumption (textile, food processing, ceramics), an annual supply contract with a quarterly price review clause provides the best balance of cost certainty and market flexibility. Avoid suppliers who refuse any price commitment — it signals supply uncertainty.
7. Trial Order Policy
Any reputable supplier will accommodate a 10–20 MT trial order before commitment to full volume. If a supplier insists on a minimum 100 MT first order, that's a red flag — they're offloading inventory risk onto a new customer.
8. Post-Sale Support
Industrial fuel buyers need responsive communication. Evaluate: How quickly does the supplier respond to quotation requests? Do they have a technical team who can advise on boiler compatibility? Can they provide references from existing customers?
