What Drives Biomass Pellet Prices?

1. Raw material availability: Biomass pellets are made from agro-waste — cotton stalk, groundnut shell, mustard husk, rice husk. Supply and rates can vary between the post-harvest and lean seasons.

2. Diesel & logistics costs: Collection and transport of raw biomass from farms to the plant is a significant part of production cost, so diesel price changes can affect pellet pricing.

3. Volume commitment: Annual supply contracts with monthly offtake commitments of 50 MT+ can support firmer pricing than spot buying.

4. Moisture content specification: Where a buyer asks for a tighter moisture limit than the standard below 10%, the price can differ; ask for the moisture figure on the batch lab report.

Price vs Coal: The True Cost Comparison

Coal prices vary by grade and supplier, so check your own invoices. Reading a Price Quote Line by Line

A per-kg figure on its own tells you very little. Two quotes of the same headline rate can differ by several rupees once you account for what sits around the number. Fuel is bought by weight but used for heat, so the figure that matters at the boiler is cost per unit of useful heat. Premium wood pellets are a separate product with their own specification (GCV 4400 to 4800 Kcal/kg, ash below 1%), so do not compare their rate against briquettes or agro pellets without adjusting for that difference.
